Seiko Active Matrix EPD e-Ink: The Digital Watch Is Back In Style Watch Releases

IWC does a good job of taking one of its in-house movements and putting it in different movements for a different look and function. You can find their popular automatic movement with a 7 day power reserve in the Portuguese, Ingenieur, and Pilot watches as an example. Most long power reserve watches are manually wound, so it is cool that this one is an automatic. IWC has some great movement finishing, as well as a cool way of engraving their automatic rotors. My favorite newer movement is the one in the bottom image. This IWC Da Vinci model is fitted with an automatic perpetual calendar chronograph movement that has two digital jumping windows for the date and month.

The watch really resembles some of the Orfina or IWC Porsche Design watches of the 80's era. Eterna has been doing well though with the brand products (even if they are overpriced). The titanium bracelet looks more simple than it actually is, with the complex link structure hidden on the side. What you see on the outside is simple and clean.

The second technical feature that is new is an in-house skeletonized Valjoux 7750 movement. Those watches that utilize 7750s are already modified by Hublot, but here Hublot has actually skeletonized the movement. One image here is of light penetrating though the movement, showing that you can see right through to the other side in parts of it. The combo of the black titanium screws, carbon fiber bridges, sapphire plate under the dial, custom tungsten carbide rotor, and skeletonization makes this feel like so much more than your average 7750 automatic chronograph movement. To make room for the F1 logo on the dial, Hublot removed the subsidiary seconds dial. If you want to measure seconds, you can use the chronograph.

Here is another watch review contributed by Santtu M. I reviewed a previous model by this brand, the Ocean Diver watch here. See his review below:

Good looks carry over to the dial as well. American based LUM-TEC now does many of Magrette's dials, using their high-quality MDV GX luminant. In comparison to early Magrette dials, this is something much different. The hour indicators are cut into the dial, and there is lots of luminant applied in them and on the hands. You can see in the lume image how nice and evenly the luminant glows. There is also an embossed face on the dial in black-on-black right over 6 o'clock that is only visible in the right light. In fact, the dials are looking so good, Magrette will need to upgrade its hands. While lume on the hands is just fine, the detailing and quality of the hands themselves is due a bit of an upgrade given how well the rest of the watch looks.

Admittedly, these watches are not conventional and that’s what I love about them. They are conversation starters with character and style. As Castro makes less than 1000 pieces a year, you won’t find them on everybody’s wrist either.

Given that whole "if money were no object" thing, one of the my top choices for modern women's watches is the Perrelet Diamond Flower. It mixes sport, style, complexity, luxury, and visual fun so well. While the collection starts in the ,000 range, these limited Prestige Edition Diamond Flower watches are colorful creations with prices in the ,000  to over 0,000 range (depending on the mixture of gold, diamonds, and other precious gems). It is one of those rare fun luxury watches that is elegant but doesn't take itself too seriously. Don't forget that the Diamond Flower features Perrelet's P-181 automatic double rotor movement. So the lotus flower on the dial spins with the automatic rotor in the back. Check out the gallery below for more of them, and see my full article on them below as well.

Next is an interesting watch for skiing enthusiasts. It is the Swatch Happy Games and features Swatch Snowpass technology. Basically there is a small chip in the watch that can be loaded with a ski resort daily, weekly, seasonal (or other term) lift ticket. Instead of carrying around the actual ticket to show at the turnstile, you just wave your Happy Games watch against a sensor at about 700 or so participating ski resorts. It is a cool feature to have in a watch. For more information about using Snowpass and participating resorts you visit the Swatch Snowpass site here.

Eterna really outdid themselves with this piece. Easily among their list of masterpieces. I felt really lucky to be checking out this watch, and I thank Eterna for that. Will there be more watches like this? Probably, but not likely in the foreseeable future. With the downturn in the economy, the demand for watches like this is much lower. Until then, the Porsche Design Indicator will remain a wonderful and exotic novelty for those fortunate enough to afford one. If you can, I highly recommend it.

The Cruise Sport is comfortable and looks pretty good. It isn't the most beautiful or awesome watch in the world, but for the price point, it does offer more refined style than that a lot of what is out there. The pieces are also durable, and will likely survive some harsh treatment. Available with a few dial colors as well, it will likely be a solid seller.

It is already clear that I love this watch. I will more than likely never get the chance to get one. In addition to my lack of being able to shell out either ,700 for the titanium version or ,400 for the pink gold version, the watches are limited to just 300 and 200 pieces respectively. So I can lust, and I can dream - and I can hope that one of you out there gets one of these and brags to me how awesome it is.

Another major step in making watch stores less relevant. I recently discussed the demise of third party watch retailers here, and a lot of people said that they still like going into stores to try watches on. So while buying timepieces online makes sense from a value and selection standpoint, it is hard to give up actually trying-on, and holding the watch. Well, this new system from Tissot doesn't exactly replace that experience 100%, but makes an awfully convincing case for skipping the store.

We all knew it was coming. First there was the new Aquaracer (called the Aquaracer 500M because it didn't actually totally replace the more basic Aquaracer) and now there is the chronograph version. It looks pretty rad actually. Feeling very similar to a dive version of the new Carrera, this watch has a similar layout, but not the 1887 automatic chronograph. The Aquaracer 500M Automatic Chronograph has a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 that they refer to as the Calibre 16 movement.

Hublot really did something special with this watch, and it looks just great. Totally epitomizing what fresh Hublot designs can feel like. In addition to the great King Power model based design, this watch has two special innovations that you will really like.  First, is a world's first developed by Hublot - a red sapphire crystal. A few years ago Rolex developed a green colored sapphire crystal for their Milgauss watches. Hublot has done the same but with red. How cool does that look? Of course the crystal is just slightly red, so as to still be transparent.
